Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can be quite serious and result in significant hospitalization and death, particularly in the very young, the elderly, and individuals with underlying comorbid conditions. In this program, we will explore the latest advances in molecular technology for the rapid detection of influenza viruses, discuss some of the issues surrounding these methods, and describe the potential impact of these newer tests on patient care and health-related outcomes.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can be quite serious and result in significant hospitalization and death, particularly in the very young, the elderly, and individuals with underlying comorbid conditions.  Rapid and accurate detection of influenza disease can play an important role in clinical care and management, but detection of influenza viruses using traditional methods can be challenging.  In this program, we will explore the latest advances in molecular technology for the rapid detection of influenza viruses, discuss some of the issues surrounding these methods, and describe the potential impact of these newer tests on patient care and health-related outcomes.

 

Upon completion of this webinar, the participant should be able to: 

 

· Discuss the newest molecular technologies available for the rapid detection of influenza viruses;

· Explain the advantages and disadvantages of rapid nucleic acid amplification tests for influenza virus detection; and

· Discuss how these newer molecular technologies may change the clinical and diagnostic paradigm in the care and management of individuals with influenza.
