The 2020 Molecular Virology Workshop (May 2, 2020; West Palm Beach, FL) will focus on four areas that are highly relevant to Clinical Virology and Molecular Diagnostic laboratories. First, the workshop will provide practical education on the “Do’s” and “Don’ts” related to proficiency testing (PT) in a molecular diagnostics lab. Second, as healthcare institutions and public health agencies are faced with an increasing number of outbreaks caused by infectious diseases, there is a need to discuss how clinical laboratories can better partner both within their hospital as well as with public health and reference laboratories to address these challenges. Third, healthcare is beginning to see the emergence and implementation of rapid, point-of-care molecular tests that offer similar performance to centralized lab tests. The workshop faculty will discuss this topic, and review why laboratory professionals will play a critical role in the success of point-of-care and near-patient diagnostic testing. Finally, the era of metagenomics for diagnosis of infectious diseases is upon us; however the role of this technology in patient care remains uncertain, as does its potential to become a front-line diagnostic approach. The 2020 Molecular Virology Workshop will address this issue head-on, and participants will debate the future applications of metagenomics in viral diagnostics. We hope to see you in West Palm Beach on May 2, 2020!
